Disasters and the Blackhawks

There sure are a lot of things going on in the world now that 2008 is drawing to a close.  Israel continues to pound Gaza in an unbalanced show of power.  Governor Rod Blagojevich appointed someone to Obama’s tainted Senate seat against the wishes of House Democrats.  The problems in the Congo are still going on, global warming is an issue still, corporations are using “being green” as a new selling point, and here is the only good news to come out the end of the year, I continue to write about the Chicago Blackhawks for www.chicagosporting.com!  Yes, in all this madness at least the Hawks are doing well.  So hesitate not, go to www.chicagosporting.com and read my articles.

Once again another self-promotion, riots in Greece

So have you ye, I write, right, for www.chicagosporting.com covering the Blackhawks, mostly doing post game stories.  Hopefully in the future I will be doing features and interviews, but for now it is just game stories.  Also, how about those riots in Greece?  Lots of stuff burning, looks like the focus has been lost.  A point was made and then taken too far.  Senseless violence it is now.  I saw a picture of a girl rioting holding up her fingers in the peace sign, I thought that was ironic.  Now solidarity riots in other parts of Europe, seems like the ultra-left just looking for a reason to break stuff.

Way to go, Blago!

Good job there, Blago, you make it two Illinois governors to be arrested on corruption charge.  Did you not get to office as the well needed purity and reform Illinois needed to get back on track after all the corrupt years under Republican George Ryan?  Now you are caught on tape trying to sell Obama’s Senate seat?  Come on…

What’s funny about Blago is that corruption was in the air long before any of this came about.  You would think that he would have been aware of this, as I was and anyone that catches the televised advertisements for the Chicago news on any channel, and steered clear of scandal, especially around something on the Federal level.  Did he not think the government would pay attention to this?  Now the Republicans have the upper hand in 2010, the next Illinois governor election.  I am getting flashbacks of ’94…

On top of this, the right, and cable news channels, now have an opening to criticize Obama before he has even sworn in.  Though he is not directly involved, his name is attached, and thus he, according to some, can be guilty of association.  McCain tried that in the campaign, remember Bill Ayers…

Pakistani Militants Destroy US/NATO Supplies

Pakistani militants are stepping up their attacks by destroying over 160 US and NATO vehicles at two transport terminals.  The vehicles eventually would have made their way to Afghanistan to fight “the war on terror.”  The US and NATO ship supplies through Pakistan as Afghanistan is a landlocked country, now they will have to think twice.  If more of these attacks are to happen, retaliation will be eminent.  The question goes back to an earlier blog, will Bush do it alone or with Obama’s blessing?  And if he fails to do so, will Obama do it as he stated about Iran in his speech in Berlin, Europe will join the US in any more action in the war on terror?

Shameless Self-Promotion

Yes, a shameless self-promotion for none other than myself, hence the “self” part in self-promotion, and since no one reads the news on Friday, what better time than now?  Recently I began writing post game stories for the Chicago Blackhawks on www.chicagosporting.com.   The stories are short and sweet and they recap the main highlights of the game.  For those who do not know, the Chicago Blackhawks are a professional hockey team from the National Hockey League (NHL).   It is a great time to be writing for Chicago Sporting about the Hawks as they are at the beginning of a renaissance and becoming a household name in the Chicago area again.  Just a few years ago they were named the worst franchise in sports, now they are in second place in the Central Division, go figure.  So, hesitate not, read away.

Palin - Booed at Flyers’ Home Opener

Well, there is not much that I can really write about that hasn’t been said, but I am extremely glad and happy that the Flyers’ fans gave Palin the most unfriendly welcoming for her ceremonial opening puck drop at the Flyers’ home opener.  Even the recorded applause pumped in over the PA system could not overtake the boo’s.  The Obama/Biden signs in the front row amongst the cheering wealthy* were a good addition.

*A perfect example of the social stratification that is every professional sporting event; rich close to the action, poor (the real fans) far away and out of sight.  And why do the wealthy always get the free t-shirts and win other prizes in the stadium?

Palin - Puck Drop at Flyers’ Opener

Apparently Palin is going to drop the puck at the ceremonial opening face-off for the Philadelphia Flyers’ home opener for some lame hockey mom contest.  The Flyers want to thank her for the attention she has brought to hockey and the NHL.  Of course, Philadelphia happens to be in a swing state, no coincidence there.  As if my distaste for Palin’s association with hockey wasn’t excessive as is, now she is making personal appearances at NHL games.  All I can say is that I hope the Flyers pay for this disgrace to the sport and Palin’s attempt to turn it into a right wing tool, which is ironic as the NHL has pledged to become carbon-neutral and is actively bringing attention to global warming (no ice = no hockey).

note: according to Wikipedia.org, Flyers’ owner Ed Snider “…and philosopher Leonard Peikoff founded the Ayn Rand Institute for the advancement of Objectivism” in 1985.

***In addition, on Keith Oberman last night, he mentioned that Ed Snider is a maxed-out GOP donator and he is using Philadelphia and Pennsylvania tax dollars to bring Palin for this non-political, non-partisan event aka a GOP Photo-op.

Obama/McCain Debate 2 Recap

McCain’s hero: Reagan or Teddy Roosevelt, I am not quite sure, he mentioned them both.

My friends, how many friends does McCain have?  And where does this old bastard get off assuming that all Americans are his friends.

Word of the Debate(s): Fundamental

Soft speaking McCain: Just because you talk like this it does not make you anymore likable.

McCain must like blood; he seems to talk about it a lot.

Why is McCain always looking off to the side and not at Obama?  He looks just like a crazy old man sitting on a bench staring off into nowhere.  (Or is he like Bush in 2004 and getting signals from off stage?)

McCain’s old man whistling when he speaks: imagine four or more years of that.

Where were the minorities in the debate audience?  In a country where 12% of the population is black/African-American, 6% of the population is Hispanic and 4% of the population is Asian, where were these people?  I think I counted five black people in the whole audience, no Latino/Hispanic, no Asian, no Native American, no Arab/Middle-Eastern.  Who is this election for?

Where do they find these robot-like audiences for the debates?  They don’t laugh, they don’t smile, and they can’t read the question they supposedly wrote without sounding like a first year theater student.  Is this the way the media and politicians think of the American public, somnambulists on a chair, not listening, not thinking, or is this the way they want the American people to be?

When will these TV debates become real?

Palin - The Russia Question

“I don’t know…reporters.”  Another classic quote from Sarah Palin, this being her response to Katie Couric’s question about her citing the proximity to Russia as foreign policy experience.  Watching Palin is just torturous, between her “um’s”, her stutters and stammers, and her off-rhythm speech patterns, the Republican stare in her eyes cannot cover up for the fact that this woman has no clue as to what she is talking about.

“Our next door neighbors are foreign countries in the state that I am the executive of.”

Going by Palin’s logic that Alaska’s neighbors are foreign countries (Canada does pose a large threat these days), George W. Bush must have been a foreign policy expert as well while governor of Texas.  And I like how she slipped Putin’s name in there, as if the Russians aren’t pissed at the US enough, now this idiot goes on national television and says, “As Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America, where, where do they go?  It’s Alaska, it’s just right over the border.”

Her speech patterns, facial expressions, and her “Aren’t you an idiot for not understanding this” demeanor is oddly familiar…I’m reminded of another person that Karl Rove issued into Presidency…

Please watch and laugh and then cry as she has a chance at becoming VP and ultimately President.

Oh yeah, can anybody really take someone serious who is wearing a Barbie-pink blazer?

McCain - Fight to Lose

I just saw a certified “hockey mom” on the Today Show say, “If someone is going to lead this country, they have to have served.”  Naturally she is a McCain supporter.  I couldn’t help think of the irony of this woman’s statement; she probably voted for Bush instead of Kerry in ‘04, and then Bush over Gore in ’00.  These are just speculations, but there is a good chance that they are true.  Then I thought of the list of President’s who have not served: George W. Bush (going AWOL in the Texas Air National Guard does not count), Bill Clinton, FDR, Herbert Hoover, Calvin Coolidge, Warren G. Harding, Woodrow Wilson, Taft, Cleveland, Van Buren, John Quincy Adams, and John Adams.  Then guys like Lincoln, Carter, and Reagan served but never saw combat, making the argument irrelevant.  Of course the thoughtless rebuttal would be, “Times are different, this is a time of war.”  But that again makes no sense being that Wilson served as President during WWI without any military experience and W has been President for the past eight years, entering the US into countless combat situations all without any real experience.

I think of the line from McCain’s RNC acceptance speech that went along the lines of, “I know how to win wars,” and I laugh.  Did he not serve in Vietnam?  And did he not get captured by the enemy?  And then was he not released until after the war was all but lost?  Does anyone else not see how ironic this is?  If there is anyone that does not ‘know how to win wars’ it is McCain.  If there is anyone that does not know how to fight, it is McCain.  If there is anyone anybody should vote for, it is Obama.
