Palin – The Double Standard

Published by mxyplix8 at 12:11 pm under current events, my life, politics Edit This

In a recent interview, Palin discussed how the media is applying a double standard to her, focusing on things like her wardrobe and her ability to raise children while in the White House.  Palin foolishly passes up the opportunity to make a stand for women and women’s rights, falling back into this 1950’s view of family and women that the neo-con faction of the Republican party grasp to.  She could have voiced her opinion and said that it is unfair, not just to her, but to all women, that this double standard exists.  Just because a woman is choosing a difficult career path does not imply that the family will be neglected.  In addition, it is a family, so her husband should be there as well to support her and the family while she works.  Her problem is that she is a conservative.  If she were to make a point about these gender biases and outdated notions of motherhood and so forth, she would come off as progressive and liberal.  In order to maintain her image and her voter base, she has to believe, willingly or unwillingly, that these sorts of things do not exist.  So her solution to the problem, like many people, is to just ignore it and pretend it doesn’t exist.
