Palin - Hockey Mom?

I keep hearing the phrase “Hockey Mom” repeated blindly by people and the media in reference to VP-candidate Sarah Palin.  Has anyone stopped to think of the absurdity of this term?  Are there really that many hockey moms around that will make a difference in the voting in the upcoming election?  And on top of it, does anyone really no a “hockey mom”?  First there were soccer moms in their mini-vans, and then there was the infamous NASCAR dad rocketing around in his mini-van, now there are hockey moms?  Do they cruise around on zambonies in between periods cleaning the ice for their kids?  Do they sharpen skates?  Tape up sticks?  What the hell is a hockey mom?

The fact that people have latched onto this term so easily says a lot of the American public.  Hockey is by far the least popular sport in the US; this is obvious considering there were rumors that the NHL was going to fold after the strike which cancelled the 2004-2005 season, a cancellation that only a few die hard fans noticed.  Most children in the US do not play hockey due to the high cost of equipment or lack of outdoor ice (which by the way, the NHL is attempting to become the first carbon-neutral professional sports league in the US, a plan counter to most Republican initiatives).  I personally take offense to the Republicans squandering hockey’s good name, as it is my favorite sport even though I cannot get tickets to a Blackhawks’ game for the life of me. (Last season I could walk up to the door on game day, now I cannot get tickets for a game 5 months from now.)  I can see the term “hockey mom” being relevant in Canada where a larger percentage of kids probably do play hockey at one time in their life, but in the US, with the exception of the northern border states, not that many kids actually play hockey, thus there are even fewer “hockey moms,” thus the term seems even more ridiculous.  “She’s a hockey mom”  “she’s a hockey mom”  “she’s a hockey mom.”  I just wish people would stop and think.

DUDE THANK YOU. I feel the same way… People are suddenly using this like it’s some common term… It also kind of weird how terms appear every election year that are repeated. Like flip-flopper with John Kerry and “Out of touch” this year is used back and forth over and over… It really makes me wonder about the intelligence of the US and their ability to do something original.

    Also you made a typo.

‘And on top of it, does anyone really NO a “hockey mom”?’

    Pretty sure you meant “know”.

    In any case… Good article.

Thanks for the comment and thanks for the heads up on the typo, those always manage to slip in.
